The G-Wagon tax write-off: what the IRS rules say
The G-Wagon tax write-off comes from one number: the Mercedes-Benz G-Class sits in the 7,001 to 8,000 pound gross vehicle weight class, above the 6,000 pound line in the IRS's passenger-automobile definition.

Key takeaways
For an SUV over that line that a business buys and uses more than 50% for business, IRS Publication 946 sets a Section 179 maximum of $32,000 for 2026 and describes a 100% special depreciation allowance. The rules are quoted below from the IRS. We are a licensed auto broker, not tax advisers: your tax professional decides what applies to your business, and we find the G-Class and deliver it.
Why the G-Wagon is the SUV people name
The IRS draws its line at a gross vehicle weight rating of 6,000 pounds. Most luxury cars and crossovers are rated below it and count as passenger automobiles, which carry a yearly depreciation maximum. The G-Class is built on a ladder frame, and every version sits well above the line:
G 550 and AMG G 63, 2026 model year: 7,001 to 8,000 lb class
G 580, 2027 model year: 7,001 to 8,000 lb class
G 550, 2019 specification sheet: 6,614 lbs, the last US rating Mercedes-Benz USA published
Sources: NHTSA vehicle database (vPIC), weight class reported by the maker; MBUSA Newsroom, 2019 Mercedes-Benz G550 Specifications. NHTSA records the weight class each maker reports for its US vehicles.
The rating is printed on the certification label on the driver's door jamb. It is the loaded rating the maker sets, not what the vehicle weighs empty.
What the IRS says about an SUV over 6,000 pounds
It is outside the passenger-automobile maximums. Publication 946 defines a passenger automobile as a four-wheeled vehicle rated at 6,000 pounds or less of unloaded gross vehicle weight, or 6,000 pounds or less of gross vehicle weight for trucks and vans. For passenger automobiles placed in service in 2026, Revenue Procedure 2026-15 sets a first-year depreciation maximum of $20,300 with the special depreciation allowance.
Section 179 has an SUV maximum. For tax years beginning in 2026, the maximum Section 179 expense deduction for a sport utility vehicle rated above 6,000 and not more than 14,000 pounds is $32,000 (Publication 946, "What's New for 2026").
The special depreciation allowance is back at 100%. Publication 946 states that Public Law 119-21 reinstated the 100% special depreciation allowance for certain qualified property acquired and placed in service after January 19, 2025.
Those three published rules are what people mean by the G-Wagon write-off. How they add up on your return is your tax professional's calculation. The source is IRS Publication 946.
The conditions the IRS attaches
The business buys it. Publication 946: "To qualify for the section 179 deduction, your property must have been acquired by purchase." A financed purchase counts: the publication's own example is a van bought with payments over five years, which its owner can depreciate. A leased G-Class is deducted through its payments instead, as leasing a car through your business explains.
More than 50% business use. The Section 179 election is available only if the vehicle is used more than 50% for business in the year it is placed in service, and the deduction is figured on the business share of the cost. Publication 946 also covers what happens if business use later drops to 50% or less.
In service within the tax year. The IRS counts a vehicle as placed in service "when it is ready and available for a specific use". For a business on the calendar year, that means delivered and ready by December 31.
Records. A vehicle is listed property, and Publication 946 sets out the records the IRS expects, including business mileage.
The conditions the IRS attaches
Four things have to be true.
1
The business buys it
Section 179 needs property acquired by purchase. A financed purchase counts.
2
More than 50% business use
In the year it is placed in service. The deduction is figured on the business share.
3
In service in the tax year
Ready and available for use. On a calendar year, by December 31.
4
Records
A vehicle is listed property. The IRS expects records, including business mileage.
In California
The federal rules above do not carry over to the California return unchanged. The Franchise Tax Board's instructions for form FTB 3885A state that for California purposes the maximum Section 179 expense deduction is $25,000, and list the federal additional first-year depreciation among the differences between federal and California law.
Other SUVs over the same line
The rule is about weight rating, not about one model. The GLS, the BMW X7, the Range Rover, the Cadillac Escalade and many more carry ratings above 6,000 pounds. The full list, with each maker's published figure, is in vehicles over 6,000 pounds.
How 021 helps
We source the G-Class the way we source every vehicle. We find the exact build, get several dealers to quote the same vehicle, and send you one written quote before you agree to anything, as a cash purchase, a financed purchase or a lease. We deliver anywhere in California, and in-stock vehicles can go from inquiry to keys in under 48 hours, which helps when a vehicle has to be in service before a tax year closes. See the G-Class at 021, or tell us the G-Class you want.
