Toyota lease return and every other lease-end option
A Toyota lease return goes through Toyota Financial Services (TFS): get a free courtesy pre-inspection at a Toyota dealer within 60 days of your return, fix what you choose, and book a turn-in appointment about 30 days before maturity at an authorized Toyota or Lexus dealer, ideally the one that wrote your lease.

Key takeaways
TFS waives the disposition fee if your next car is a new or certified Toyota or Lexus leased or financed through TFS or Lexus Financial Services around the time of your return, or if you've had three or more contracts with them. Selling to an outside buyer such as CarMax is less certain: reports say TFS stops accepting third-party payoffs on October 1, 2026, so confirm before you sign.

How a Toyota lease return works
Courtesy pre-inspection. Ask your originating dealer or any Toyota dealer whether it can do one, and do it within 60 days before your return. The report, with estimated excess wear charges, is ready right away and also posts to the Document Center in the TFS app and at toyotafinancial.com.
Repairs. A Toyota dealer can do them. Keep every receipt, and check whether your insurance covers any of the damage.
Book the turn-in. Call the dealer that wrote your lease about 30 days before maturity; it's the one required to process the return. Most Toyota and Lexus dealers will also take it, but confirm first.
Turn it in. Bring the car clean, with every set of keys, the owner's manuals, the toolkit and spare tire if it has them, and any equipment that was on the car when you leased it. Missing items can be charged. The dealer does a final inspection at the appointment or within a few days, and you sign the odometer disclosure statement. Keep a copy, note the name of the person who helped you, and take photos of the car.
Tell TFS. Use Submit Return Details on the Return Your Vehicle page at toyotafinancial.com or in the app, or call (800) 874-8822. Then cancel any automatic payments.
Final invoice. TFS mails it 60 to 120 days after the return. A security deposit, if you paid one, comes back by check after it covers any charges.
More on turn-in day: returning a leased car. TFS's own steps start on its lease-end options page.
What Toyota counts as excess wear
TFS uses the size of a credit card as the yardstick for many kinds of damage. Examples of excess wear in its guidelines:
A scratch, or a group of scratches, larger than a credit card that goes through the paint.
A single dent larger than a credit card, poorly done earlier repairs, unrepaired collision damage, or holes in body panels.
Tires with exposed cords or sidewall damage, tires or wheels that don't meet the manufacturer's safety guidelines, and wheel gouges, dents or cracks larger than a credit card.
Windshield cracks, stars or bull's-eyes, and bent, broken or missing lights, mirrors or turn signals.
A cut, tear, burn or stain in the seats or trim larger than a credit card.
Missing keys or remotes, missing parts such as headrests or the cargo cover, broken equipment, and any modification that wasn't on the car when you leased it.
Leases signed after January 27, 2026 include a waiver of excess wear charges up to a set limit; missing keys, remotes and other equipment are excluded. On earlier leases, charges may be waived if you bought an excess wear and use protection product. As of September 2026, TFS says it isn't offering extra miles for purchase, so miles over your allowance are billed at the per-mile rate in your lease. Whether to repair first: excess wear and tear on a leased car.
Buying your Toyota at lease end
Get a payoff quote in your TFS online account or by calling (800) 286-0652. To finance the purchase, go through your dealer and TFS; to pay directly, TFS gives you the payoff amount, the mailing address and the sale documents. At maturity, the price is the purchase option price in your lease, which is the residual value set when you signed; before then, it's the payoff. TFS notes that some states require the purchase to go through a dealer, so ask when you request the quote.
California treats a lease buyout as a taxable purchase. When a dealer handles it, the dealer collects the tax. When you buy straight from the lender, the lender may not collect it, and you pay use tax to the DMV when you transfer the registration (CDTFA guide for vehicle purchasers). Financing and the DMV steps are in buying out your lease in California.
Can a third party buy out a Toyota lease?
Check before you act, because this is changing. TFS's own lease-end guide (March 2025 edition) says returning the car to a third-party dealership is an unauthorized return that leaves you responsible for the lease until TFS receives the payoff and paperwork, or until the car reaches a Toyota or Lexus dealer. That wording means an outside dealer could close the lease by paying it off. In mid-September 2026, dealers and lessee forums reported that Toyota Financial Services and Lexus Financial Services will stop accepting third-party payoffs on October 1, 2026, leaving you and Toyota or Lexus dealers as the only buyers. TFS had not published that change when we checked on September 30, 2026.
Before you accept an offer from CarMax, Carvana or a dealer of another brand, ask TFS whether it will accept that buyer's payoff, and get the answer in writing if you can.
A Toyota or Lexus dealer can still buy the car or take it in trade.
You can buy the car yourself and resell it. CDTFA presumes your buyout is a sale for resale, so it isn't taxed, if you transfer title and registration to the buyer within 10 days of getting the title and don't use the car yourself in between.
Payoff quote types and each lender's rules are in third-party lease buyouts.

A Toyota or Lexus dealer can still buy the car or take it in trade.
Any authorized Toyota or Lexus dealer can take it, but only the dealer that wrote your lease is required to.

Request it in the Support Center or by phone. TFS decides approval and length case by case.

If you've had three or more lease or finance contracts with TFS or Lexus Financial Services.
TFS says it isn't offering extra miles. Miles over your allowance are billed at the rate in your lease.
Checked September 30, 2026: TFS had not published the third-party change. Extra miles as of September 2026. Ask TFS if your next contract is in the fee window.
Ending a Toyota lease early
Return it early. Early termination charges may apply. If you return the car 31 days or more before maturity, TFS figures an early return balance using the lowest calculation your lease allows, and the invoice can take 60 to 120 days because the balance may depend on the auction sale. California caps what you owe at unpaid payments to date, other amounts due, a reasonable disposition fee, and the gap between the remaining lease balance and the car's value.
Buy it or trade it in. If you buy the car early, or trade it in toward another car, California caps the price at the remaining lease balance plus unpaid payments, other amounts due and any purchase-option fee in your contract. If the car is worth more, the difference goes to you.
Military. Eligible servicemembers can end the lease early without early termination charges under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, and TFS's Gold Star Military Program may allow early termination for eligible servicemembers and spouses after a death, catastrophic illness or injury. Call TFS at 800-874-8822 to check eligibility.
Transfer. TFS lists lease transfers as an option after a lessee's death, with the criteria given by phone. Transfer marketplaces report TFS also allows transfers in other cases, except in the first 60 days and the last six months of the lease. Confirm with TFS at 800-874-8822.
Loyalty offers. TFS runs time-limited lease loyalty offers, such as one that gave customers whose leases matured between October 2025 and March 2026 a credit toward a new Toyota through TFS. Ask your dealer what applies to your date.
How each exit is priced: getting out of a car lease early.
Extending a Toyota lease
TFS lets you request a lease maturity extension through the Support Center in your online account or by calling 800-874-8822. It decides approval and length case by case, so ask well before your maturity date and get the new end date in writing.
The Toyota disposition fee and when it's waived
TFS waives the disposition fee automatically if either of these applies:
You lease or finance your next new or Certified Used Toyota or Lexus through TFS or Lexus Financial Services at a participating dealer within 30 days of your return. The guide's fine print says the new contract must be finalized no earlier than 31 days before, and no later than 90 days after, the earlier of your maturity date or your return date.
You've had three or more lease or finance contracts with TFS or Lexus Financial Services.
Otherwise the fee listed in your lease appears on the lease-end invoice. If it should have been waived and wasn't within 30 days of your new contract, call TFS at (800) 874-8822. Background: the disposition fee.
Toyota lease return timeline: 120, 90, 60 and 30 days out
120 days: Check your payoff and miles in your TFS account, and get a written offer on the car from a Toyota dealer.
90 days: Pick a direction. If an outside buyer is interested, ask TFS whether it will accept that buyer's payoff. Start pricing your next car.
60 days: Get the courtesy pre-inspection and book any repairs worth doing. Request an extension now if you need one.
30 days: Book the turn-in with the dealer that wrote your lease. Gather every key, the manuals, the toolkit, the spare and original equipment.
After turn-in: Submit Return Details, cancel automatic payments, file the DMV release of liability, and watch for the invoice in 60 to 120 days.
In California
Early termination rights. Civil Code section 2987 lets you end a lease early and caps what TFS can charge. Before the car is sold, the lessor must send written notice at least 10 days ahead, and you can pay for an independent appraisal that binds both sides. If you return the car voluntarily and pay what you owe on time, the early termination can't be reported to credit bureaus as negative.
Tax on a buyout. Buying the car is a taxable purchase, with the 10-day resale exception described above.
Release of liability. The DMV lets a lessee file a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability. Filing it within five days of the return protects you from parking and traffic violations tied to the car afterward.
What to ask TFS or the dealer
What is my payoff today, and what will it be on my maturity date?
Will TFS accept a payoff from this buyer on the date I plan to sell?
Does my lease include the built-in excess wear waiver, and what is its limit?
Will my next contract fall inside the disposition fee waiver window?
Is there a lease loyalty offer for my maturity date?
If I extend, for how long, and does anything change?
How 021 helps
When your next car comes through 021, we can take care of your Toyota lease as well. Most often a dealer in our network takes it in trade, including a Toyota or Lexus dealer if Toyota Financial Services stops accepting outside payoffs, and any equity can go toward the next car. We can also handle the return, a buyout or a lease transfer.
021 Auto Leasing is a California-licensed auto broker (license #82402). When you're ready for the next car, Toyota or any other make, 021 gets several dealers to quote the same car, negotiates the whole deal and delivers it, and you see one written quote with payment, drive-off, term, miles, taxes, fees and 021's fee before you agree to anything. If a dealer has already quoted you, send it to Beat my deal.
