Lease extension: how to extend your car lease
A lease extension lets you keep your leased car past its scheduled end date, usually at the same monthly payment and under the same contract terms. Many carmakers' finance companies offer one, either month to month or for a fixed number of months, but you have to ask before the maturity date and be current on your payments.
What carries into the extra months
The payment usually stays. The final bill still comes.
Your regular payment usually continues. Confirm the amount in writing, including tax.
The disposition fee, mileage and wear charges still apply at return, unless a waiver covers you.
Volkswagen and Chase add allowance for the extra months. GM Financial adds none.
It runs on time and miles, and a longer lease can outlast it. Check the dates.
Ask what the purchase price will be at the end of the extension before you agree.
Ask whether they continue. Chase says add-ons do not extend with a Jaguar or Land Rover lease.
Ask before the maturity date and be current on your payments. A mileage overage you already have stays an overage.
Key takeaways
A lease extension helps when your next car is delayed or you need time to decide whether to buy. It does not erase mileage overages or damage charges, which still come due when the car goes back.
Month-to-month vs fixed-term lease extension
Month to month. You keep paying one month at a time and can return the car at the end of any month, up to the lender's limit. This is the flexible choice when your next car has no firm delivery date.
Fixed term. You agree to keep the car for a set number of months. It suits a known gap, such as a factory order due in a few months.
Re-lease. A new lease on the same car is not an extension. It comes with a new contract, a new payment and a new residual, so compare it with buying the car outright.
Why people extend a lease
The next car is on order or not yet in stock.
A new model year or a better offer is weeks away.
They want time to arrange financing for a lease buyout or to sell the car.
A move, a new job or a family change makes the next car hard to choose right now.
What stays the same, and what changes
Payment. Usually your regular monthly payment simply continues; GM Financial, for example, keeps billing it as before. Confirm the amount in writing, including tax.
Miles. Lenders differ. Volkswagen and Chase add allowance in proportion to the extra months, while GM Financial adds none, so every extra mile counts toward the overage. Either way, an existing overage stays an overage. See lease mileage overage.
Purchase price. Ask what the purchase price will be at the end of the extension before you agree, because you may decide to buy the car then.
Warranty. The factory warranty runs on time and miles, and a longer lease can outlast it. Check the dates so a repair bill does not surprise you in the extra months.
Insurance and add-ons. Keep the lender's required insurance in force. Ask whether GAP coverage and any service or wear products in your contract continue; Chase, for one, says add-on products do not extend with a Jaguar or Land Rover lease.
End-of-lease charges. The disposition fee, mileage and wear charges still apply when you return the car, unless a waiver covers you.
Lease extension policies by lender
As of September 30, 2026, from each lender's own website. Terms change, so confirm yours before you count on them.

Tesla: one extension of up to six months.

How to ask for a lease extension
Ask early. Contact the lender 30 to 60 days before the maturity date, online or by phone. Waiting until the last week risks a gap with no agreement in place.
Be current. Chase requires it for Jaguar and Land Rover extensions, and a past-due account limits your options with any lender.
Get it in writing. The confirmation should show the new end date, the payment, the mileage allowance and the purchase price at the new end date.
Set a reminder. Put the new end date in your calendar and start the return, purchase or sale about a month before it.
Do not simply keep driving past the end date without an agreement. The contract's late-return or holdover charges can apply, and the lender may treat the car as overdue.
Lease extension in California
Payments stay taxed. Extension payments are lease payments, and the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration also lists deferral fees, renegotiation fees and late-return charges among the taxable lease charges.
Registration. If the car's registration comes up for renewal during the extension, ask the lender how the renewal is handled before you agree to the extra months.
Early exit rules still help. If plans change, California's limits on early termination charges and early purchase prices for personal leases still apply; see getting out of a lease early.
What to ask your lender
Can I extend month to month, for a fixed term, or both, and for how many months in total?
Will my payment, mileage allowance and purchase price change?
Do GAP coverage and other products in my contract continue during the extension?
If I take a new car from your brand later, is the disposition fee still waived?
If my registration renews during the extension, who pays it?
How 021 helps
When your next car comes through 021, we can take care of the current lease as well. Most often a dealer in our network takes it in trade and any equity can go toward the next car, and we can also handle the return, a buyout or a lease transfer.
If you are extending because the right car is not available, 021 Auto Leasing works with more than 400 dealers and gets several of them to quote the same car. In-stock cars can go from inquiry to keys in under 48 hours, and you see one written quote with every cost before you agree to anything. My lease is ending lays out your options.
