Kia lease buyout, return and every other lease-end option
A Kia lease buyout or return goes through Kia Finance America (KFA). To buy, you get a buyout quote from your online account, a Lease-End Advisor or a Kia dealer, and in California you can pay KFA directly. To return, you book a turn-in with an authorized Kia dealer, and a formal inspection there after turn-in sets the final charges.

How a Kia lease return works
Reminders start early. Your KFA account begins asking what you plan to do when the lease has less than 7 months left, and a Lease-End Kit is mailed four months before the contract maturity date.
Estimate your charges. The online Self-Assessment takes 5 to 10 minutes. The kit also offers a complimentary pre-termination inspection at a location you pick, arranged through a Lease-End Advisor at (855) 537-8542. Neither estimate is binding, and neither includes sales tax.
Repair what's worth repairing before the maturity date. If you use a shop that isn't a Kia dealer, KFA asks you to call a Lease-End Advisor first to learn its repair requirements.
Schedule the turn-in. Contact your Kia dealer and make an appointment. KFA recommends one for an early return too, and says skipping it slows the processing. A non-Kia dealer can't take the car.
Prepare the car. Clean it inside and out and remove garage door remotes and toll tags. Return the keys and keyless remotes, the owner's manual, the headrests and any cargo cover or net. Print the Odometer Disclosure Statement, then complete and sign it at the dealer.
Tell KFA. After the return, KFA asks you to report it through the vehicle return form on its lease-end page and to upload a photo of the dealership's turn-in receipt, so it can confirm the return. The form isn't an inspection and doesn't set any charges.
Stop the payments. Cancel any automatic lease payments you set up, including ones through your bank.
End-of-Term Invoice. You're billed after the return and the formal inspection. The invoice can carry excess wear and use, excess mileage, the disposition fee, past-due payments and other fees such as taxes, tolls and parking violations. Credits left on the account are refunded to you.
The Lease Return Balance Estimator in your account shows what you'd owe if you returned the car today; KFA notes it isn't a bill. More on turn-in day: returning a leased car. KFA's own steps are on its Lease-End Overview.
What Kia counts as excess wear
KFA's Lease-End Kit accepts scratches, dings and dents under 4 inches, windshield cracks under 2 inches, window or paint chips under 1/2 inch, and tires with at least 1/8 inch of tread at the lowest point. Its Self-Assessment lists what is charged:
Panels: a dent, ding or scratch 4 inches or more long or across; a puncture of any size; paint chips of 1/2 inch or more, once per body panel.
Glass: each windshield chip, spider or bull's-eye of 1/2 inch or more. Three of them, or one crack of 2 inches or more, costs a windshield replacement.
Tires and wheels: a tire with any tread area under 1/8 inch, tires that don't match the original size or speed rating, and wheel or wheel-cover scratches 4 inches or longer.
Cabin: holes, cuts, burns and stains in the upholstery or carpet, charged once per area, with floor mats counted as an area.
Tint: peeling, bubbling, scratched or non-matching window tint.
Missing equipment: keys, per key up to two; the spare, unless the car came with an inflation kit that's still there; manufacturer parts such as the stereo, knobs or third-row seats; and an electric car's charging cable and its case.
Miles beyond the mileage option you chose are billed per mile at the rate in your lease. KFA says extra miles can be bought up front, when the lease is written. Whether to repair first: excess wear and tear on a leased car. What going over costs: lease mileage overage.
Buying your Kia at lease end
KFA gives three ways to start a buyout: your Kia dealer, a Lease-End Advisor at (855) 537-8542, or an online buyout quote in your kiafinance.com account, requested together with the Odometer Disclosure Statement. It describes the purchase option as a fixed price plus a predetermined purchase option fee, both set in your lease contract, and says a lease account may be paid off at any time without a penalty.
Eight states (CO, DC, FL, HI, IN, PA, SD and SC) require the purchase to go through a dealership. California isn't one of them, so a California lessee can buy from KFA directly:
Pay. Online, as a transaction separate from your monthly payment, or by mailing a check or money order payable to Kia Finance America with your account number and the completed Odometer Disclosure Statement. KFA can't release the title without that statement.
Tax. California residents receive a Board of Equalization letter, which KFA says serves as proof of sales tax payment at the time of purchase.
Title. Released within 15 business days after the payoff is applied, or 10 with certified funds or a cashier's check. KFA lists California as an electronic-title state: you receive a paid-in-full letter and ask the DMV for the paper title.
DMV. License, registration and other DMV fees are paid at the DMV once the title is yours.
Leasing an EV6, EV9 or Niro EV? As of October 2026, KFA's account notices tell lessees of those models within 60 days of lease end that they may be eligible for limited-time savings when they purchase their car, with an offer end date of January 4, 2027. Ask your Kia dealer or KFA's Lease-End Servicing team. Financing and the DMV steps are in buying out your lease in California.
Can a third party buy out a Kia lease?
Kia Finance America's public pages don't say either way. They explain only that in the eight dealer states the purchase runs through an authorized Kia dealer. Lessee reports conflict, so treat any yes or no you read online as unconfirmed.
Before you accept an offer from CarMax, Carvana or a dealer of another brand, ask KFA whether it will accept that buyer's payoff, and get the answer in writing if you can.
A Kia dealer can buy the car or take it in trade.
You can buy the car yourself and then sell it, because KFA lets you pay off the lease at any time without a penalty. CDTFA presumes a buyout is a sale for resale, and so not taxed, if you transfer title and registration to the buyer within 10 days of getting the title and don't use the car yourself in between. Ask KFA how the sales tax on your buyout is handled in that case before you pay.

Ending a Kia lease early
Turn it in early. KFA says you can turn the car in at any time, and that a return before the maturity date may be treated as an early termination under your lease. Its kit warns this may bring significant charges, which the contract sets out. California caps what you owe at unpaid payments to date, other amounts due, a reasonable disposition fee, and the gap between the remaining lease balance and the car's value.
Buy it or trade it in. The lease can be paid off at any time without a penalty. If you buy the car early, or trade it in toward another car, California caps the price at the remaining lease balance plus unpaid payments, other amounts due and any purchase-option fee in your contract. If the car is worth more, the difference goes to you.
Transfer. The only assumption KFA describes is after an account holder's death, when a spouse or entitled party can assume the lease with legal documents and an approved credit application. Swapalease, a lease-transfer marketplace, lists Kia Finance as not allowing transfers.
Total loss. KFA says GAP is included in its leases, under the conditions in your lease agreement.
How each exit is priced: getting out of a car lease early.
Extending a Kia lease
Eligible lessees can request a 2-month extension. Start with the online Lease Term Extension Request Form, then e-sign the agreement; a co-signer on the account signs as well. KFA processes the request once every signature is in, your lease payments are current and the initial extension payment is paid in full, and asks for 3 to 5 business days. Your new maturity date then appears on the Account Info page. You can return the car at any time during the extension, and the Loyalty Reward stays available. If you can't make the request online, call (866) 331-5632 about eligibility and other options. More: how to extend your car lease.
The Kia disposition fee and the Loyalty Reward
The disposition fee, or turn-in fee, is set in your lease contract and is owed at lease end when you don't buy the car. KFA's Loyalty Reward is the way it gets covered:
Lease or finance a new Kia with Kia Finance America within 60 days of returning your lease, and the reward covers the turn-in fee and excess wear and use charges, each up to the limit on KFA's lease-end page.
You find out at the Kia dealer whether you qualify.
Without it, the fee in your contract is on the End-of-Term Invoice. Background: the disposition fee.
Kia lease return timeline: 120, 90, 60 and 30 days out
120 days: The Lease-End Kit arrives. Get a buyout quote, open the Lease Return Balance Estimator, and ask a Kia dealer for a written offer on the car.
90 days: Decide: buy, return, sell or extend. If an outside buyer is interested, ask KFA whether it will accept that buyer's payoff. Start pricing your next car.
60 days: Run the Self-Assessment or arrange the complimentary inspection, and book the repairs worth doing. With an EV6, EV9 or Niro EV, ask about the purchase savings. Request the 2-month extension now if you need it.
30 days: Schedule the turn-in with your Kia dealer. Collect the keys and remotes, the owner's manual, the headrests and the cargo cover, and print the Odometer Disclosure Statement.
After turn-in: Send KFA the vehicle return form with a photo of the turn-in receipt, cancel automatic payments, and file the DMV release of liability.
In California
Early termination rights. Civil Code section 2987 lets you end a lease early and caps what KFA can charge. Before the car is sold, the lessor must send written notice at least 10 days ahead, and you can pay for an independent appraisal that binds both sides. If you return the car voluntarily and pay what you owe on time, the early termination can't be reported to credit bureaus as negative.
Tax on a buyout. Buying the car is a taxable purchase. KFA's Board of Equalization letter is your proof that the tax was paid.
Release of liability. The DMV lets a lessee file a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability. Filing it within five days of the return protects you from parking and traffic violations tied to the car afterward.
What to ask KFA or the dealer
What is my buyout quote today, and what will it be on my maturity date?
Will KFA accept a payoff from this buyer on the date I plan to sell?
Does the purchase savings notice apply to my car?
Am I eligible for the 2-month extension, and what is the initial extension payment?
Which disposition fee does my contract list, and does the Loyalty Reward cover it?
Will my next contract fall inside the 60 days?
How 021 helps
When your next car comes through 021, we can take care of your Kia lease as well. Most often a dealer in our network takes it in trade, and any equity can go toward the next car. We can also handle the return or a buyout.
021 Auto Leasing is a California-licensed auto broker (license #82402). When you're ready for the next car, Kia or any other make, 021 gets several dealers to quote the same car, negotiates the whole deal and delivers it, and you see one written quote with payment, drive-off, term, miles, taxes, fees and 021's fee before you agree to anything. See Kia lease deals in Los Angeles, or if a dealer has already quoted you, send it to Beat my deal.
