California sales tax on a car lease: how it works
California sales tax on a car lease is charged on each monthly payment, not on the full price of the car. It's also charged on taxable amounts you pay at signing, such as a cash down payment (cap cost reduction), trade-in credit applied to the lease, and the dealer's document and bank fees.
Lease tax, payment by payment
Tax is charged on each payment, not on the car's price.

A 10% rate chosen for easy math. Your rate is the statewide 7.25% plus any district taxes for the address where the car is registered, not the dealer's.
Key takeaways
The rate is the combined rate for the address where the car is registered: the statewide 7.25% plus any district taxes. If you buy the car at the end, the buyout is taxed as a sale.
How California sales tax on a car lease works
California treats a car lease as a continuing sale, so tax is charged on each payment as it comes due. You owe the tax, and the leasing company collects it with your payment and pays it to the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA). You don't pay tax on the residual value, the part of the car you hand back, unless you buy the car.
There's one exception. A leasing company can instead pay tax up front on its own purchase price of the car. If it does, your payments aren't taxed, and the lessor must note on your paperwork why no tax is charged.
What's taxed on a California lease
Each monthly payment, including the rent charge, the interest-like part.
A cash cap cost reduction. CDTFA treats it as rent paid in advance.
Trade-in credit applied to the lease. It's included in the amount taxed.
Rebates you assign to the dealer and apply to the lease, which are generally treated like cash you paid.
Dealer and lender fees at signing: the document preparation fee, the bank or acquisition fee and any booking fee.
Charges later in the lease: excess wear and mileage charges, charges for returning the car late, lease assumption (transfer) fees, and deferral or renegotiation fees.
What is taxed on a California lease
What California taxes, and what it doesn't.
Including the rent charge, the interest-like part.
A cash cap cost reduction is treated as rent paid in advance. The tax is normally paid at signing.
Trade-in credit applied to the lease is included in the amount taxed.

Also charges for returning the car late, lease transfer fees, and deferral or renegotiation fees.
The part of the car you hand back. It is taxed only if you buy the car.
Whether they're paid at signing or with renewals.
Unless it's later applied to something taxable.
One exception: a leasing company can instead pay tax up front on its own purchase price. Then your payments aren't taxed, and your paperwork must say why.
What isn't taxed
DMV title and registration fees.
A refundable security deposit, unless it's later applied to something taxable.
Reasonable late-payment penalties.
Optional products the lease doesn't require, such as an optional GAP waiver, and insurance you're free to buy elsewhere when it's stated separately.
Which California sales tax rate applies to your car lease
The rate is set by where the car is registered, not where the dealer is. CDTFA treats a leased car's registration address as the place it's used. The statewide base rate is 7.25%, and voter-approved district taxes add to it. More than one district tax can apply in the same place, and a city's district tax applies only inside its city limits. Look up the combined rate for your address with CDTFA's rate lookup.
Because the tax is charged payment by payment, tell your leasing company if you move and re-register the car. If you're bringing a leased car into California, see moving to California with a leased car.
How to calculate the tax on a lease payment
Multiply each taxable amount by your combined rate.
Example (made-up round numbers, with a 10% rate chosen for easy math; use your real rate):
A base monthly payment of $715.56 carries $71.56 of tax, for $787.11 a month.
A $2,000 cash cap cost reduction carries $200 of tax, normally paid at signing.
A $100 taxable dealer fee adds $10 of tax; DMV fees add none.
In the same example, over a 36-month lease, the tax on those payments comes to $2,576, on $25,760 of payments. A buyer of the same $50,000 car would pay $5,000 in tax, and a trade-in wouldn't reduce it.
California sales tax on a lease buyout
Buying your leased car is a taxable sale. Tax applies to the buyout price, whatever tax you paid on the lease payments, at the rate for the address where you register the car.
Who collects it depends on who handles the sale. If a dealer handles the buyout, the dealer normally collects the tax. If the bank or leasing company sells to you directly and doesn't collect it, you pay use tax to the DMV when you transfer the registration.
Quick resale. If you transfer the title and registration to a buyer within 10 days of getting the title from the lessor, CDTFA presumes you bought the car to resell it, and your buyout isn't taxed. That doesn't hold if you use the car personally first or give it away instead of selling it.
More on the process in buying out your lease. Selling the car to a dealer or buying service depends on your lender's rules; see third-party lease buyouts.
Leasing, buying and sales tax in California
Purchase: tax is due on the full selling price, and a trade-in allowance doesn't reduce it. The out-the-door price calculator adds it up for your city.
Lease: tax is due only on what you pay, including the rent charge. Interest on a car loan, by contrast, isn't subject to sales tax when it's stated separately.
Lease, then buy: you pay tax on the payments and then on the buyout price.
How that plays out over three and six years is in lease vs buy a car.
What to check on your quote
The tax rate used, compared with CDTFA's lookup for your registration address, not the dealer's address.
That tax is charged on the cap cost reduction and on taxable fees, and not on DMV fees.
That the monthly payment shows tax on its own line.
If you're trading in a car, how the trade-in credit is applied and taxed.

Lease tax and purchase tax
A lease is taxed on what you pay. A purchase, on the full price.
Tax on $25,760 of payments.
Tax on the same $50,000 car. A trade-in wouldn't reduce it.
Made-up round numbers at a 10% rate. If you buy the car at the end of the lease, the buyout price is taxed as a sale as well.
