What a car buying service does, and what 021 does differently

A car buying service finds the car you want, negotiates the price and handles the paperwork and delivery, so you do not spend the afternoon at a dealership. The name covers very different businesses. Membership programs such as AAA Auto Buying and the Costco Auto Program send you to a participating dealer at a pre-arranged price; the dealer still sells you the car, and you still go in. Some concierge services charge by the hour to coach you through a purchase you make yourself.

021 is a licensed California auto broker. We hold no inventory, so there is no car we need you to take. You tell us the make, model, trim and color, new or used, and how you want to pay. Several of our dealers quote that car, we negotiate the whole deal, and you get one written price with every line on it. The car comes to your door. How a car broker works in California and what an auto broker does are explained on their own pages.

How buying a car through 021 works

Four steps, one specialist from the first message to the keys.

  • Tell us the car. Make, model, trim, color, new or used, and whether you want to finance, pay cash or put a trade-in toward it. One form or one phone call.

  • We work the network. Several of our 400+ dealers quote the same car, so the price you get is a real market price, not one store's opening offer.

  • One written price. The car, taxes, fees and our fee on one page, and if you finance, the rate, term, down payment and monthly as well, before you agree to anything.

  • Keys at your door. Signing and delivery are arranged around you, anywhere in Los Angeles. For in-stock cars this is usually under 48 hours from your first message.

New, used or certified pre-owned

New cars are any make and model, Toyota to Lamborghini, built to order or found in stock. Used and certified pre-owned cars come from dealer inventory across California, and a manufacturer-certified car keeps the factory warranty that comes with the certification. Rare and hard-to-find cars are sourced too. Used cars can be financed or leased as well as bought outright; tell us which you prefer and the quote is written that way.

Finance, cash or a trade-in

Financing is lined up through our dealer and lender network, with the rate, term, down payment and monthly payment in writing before you decide, and a secure credit application you can finish from your phone. Paying cash, you get one out-the-door price for the car, in writing, with no add-ons you did not ask for. If you have a car to trade, we find the best offer for it and the value goes straight into your new deal, one conversation for both cars. If you only want to sell, sell or trade your car covers that on its own.

The written price

Every line of the price, before you sign anything.

  1. 1The carThe price for the exact car you chose, agreed before anything is signed.
  2. 2Taxes and feesEvery tax and fee on its own line. Nothing bundled, nothing added later.
  3. 3Our feeIts own line, in the contract before you sign, paid at delivery with the rest.
  4. 4Your current carThe offer for your trade-in and where that value goes in the deal.
  5. 5If you financeThe rate, the term, the down payment and the monthly payment, all in writing.

What is on the written price

One page, every line, before you agree to anything. The price of the car. Taxes and fees, each one named. Our fee, as its own line. If you have a trade-in, the offer for it and where it goes. If you finance, the rate, the term, the down payment and the monthly payment. Nothing arrives later as a surprise at a signing table, because the signing happens at your door with the same numbers you already approved.

That is also how you compare us with anyone else. Put our whole number, fee included, next to the best dealer offer you can get on your own. If the dealer wins, take the dealer.

Dealership, membership program or broker: what changes

At a dealership you can only buy what is on that lot, at that store's price, and the salesperson, the manager and the finance office all work for the store. A membership program such as AAA Auto Buying or the Costco Auto Program gives you a pre-arranged price at a participating dealer, which is often a fair price, but it is one dealer's price, the car has to be on that dealer's lot, and you still spend the afternoon there. A licensed broker starts from the car you want, not from an inventory, puts it in front of several dealers, and brings you the best written offer with delivery included. The broker's fee is the cost of that; the written price shows it.

What it costs

Our fee is written into your contract before you sign, next to the price, and you pay it at delivery with the rest of the deal. The right comparison is the whole quote, fee included, against the whole dealer offer. Asking is free: a request costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

Who uses a car buying service

People who know exactly what they want and do not want to visit six dealerships to find the best price on it. People who know roughly what they want and would rather have the options and the numbers side by side than be sold to. People replacing a lease, adding a car for a new driver, or buying for a parent who cannot do the dealership rounds. And people outside Los Angeles proper, in Orange County, Ventura County or San Diego, who want the car to come to them.

What happens on delivery day

The car comes to your home or office at a time you pick, with the paperwork. You sign there, with the numbers you already approved, and the keys are yours. If you would rather see the car first, we arrange a look or a drive before you commit, and if you prefer to collect it, the nearest dealership works too. For a car that is in stock, the whole thing is usually under 48 hours from your first message. A car that has to be found or ordered from the factory takes as long as the search or the build takes, and you know that before you decide.

What to have ready

Your driver's license and proof of insurance, as for any car. If you finance, the credit application, which is secure and takes a few minutes on your phone. If you have a trade-in, the registration, both keys, and the payoff information from your current lender if the car is not paid off; a few photos by text are enough for the first offer. If you want a specific build, the trim, the color inside and out, and the options you will not do without.

How to compare car buying services

Ask who holds the license and look it up. Ask who sells you the car: with a broker it is still a dealer of record, which is normal, and the contract should say so. Ask for the whole price in writing before you commit, with the service's fee on it, and refuse any service that will only talk numbers at a signing. Read the reviews, and notice whether the business answers them. Then compare the whole written number, not a monthly figure on its own.

Common questions

Is it worth it to use a car buying service?

If your time is worth more than an afternoon at a dealership, or you would rather several stores compete for your car than negotiate at one counter, yes. The test is the written quote: compare the whole number, fee included, with the best dealer offer you can get yourself.

Which car buying service is best?

The one that is licensed, puts every number in writing before you agree, and answers its reviews. Membership programs send you to a dealer at a pre-arranged price and you still do the visit; a licensed broker quotes several dealers and delivers the car. In California, check the DMV license number of anyone who arranges a purchase for you. Ours is #82402.

How much does a car concierge cost?

Some charge by the hour, some a flat fee, some a share of the savings. At 021 the fee is one line on the written contract before you sign, paid at delivery with the rest of the deal, and asking for a quote is free.

Is a car broker better than going to a dealership?

A dealership can only sell you the cars on its own lot, at its own price. A broker puts the same car in front of several dealers and brings you the best written offer, then delivers it. The trade-off is that you do not test-drive at the store; we arrange a drive if you want one. More in [broker or dealership](/library/car-broker-vs-dealership).

Can I buy a used car through a car buying service?

Yes. Used and certified pre-owned cars come from dealer inventory across California, and a manufacturer-certified car keeps its factory warranty. Used cars can be financed or leased as well as bought outright.

Do I have to visit a dealership at all?

No. The quotes, the paperwork and the delivery come to you. If you want to see or drive the car first, we arrange it.

How long does it take?

For a car that is in stock, usually under 48 hours from your first message to the car at your door. A car that has to be found or built takes as long as the search or the factory takes, and we tell you that up front.

Can you get a specific color or spec?

Yes. Tell us the exact build and we search the dealers that have it or can order it. Hard-to-find cars are part of the work.

Do you take trade-ins?

Yes. We find the best offer for your current car and the value goes into the new deal, so one conversation covers both cars.

How do I check a car buying service is legitimate?

In California, anyone who arranges a car purchase for you must hold a dealer license with an autobroker endorsement from the DMV. Look the number up on the DMV's site, read the Google reviews, and ask for a written quote with every number on it before you agree to anything.
