01

Pricing factors

When you lease a vehicle, you pay for the portion of the vehicle's value used during the lease term, plus a finance charge and applicable taxes. The visible monthly payment is shaped by the vehicle's residual at the end of the term, the lender's finance charge, the term length, the allowed annual mileage, the amount due at signing, and your credit. In California, sales or use tax on a leased motor vehicle is generally calculated on the lease payments rather than the full vehicle price, which is why California lease payments often look lower than purchase comparisons at the same vehicle and term.

02

Six-variable lease comparison table

Use these six columns when comparing lease offers across any model. (1) Vehicle and trim. (2) Term length in months. (3) Annual mileage cap and per-mile overage fee. (4) Monthly payment. (5) Due-at-signing total (first payment plus any cap-cost reduction, fees, and tax up front). (6) Disposition or purchase-option fee at end. Compute total of payments (monthly times term) plus due-at-signing for each row. The cheapest gross-cash row is not always the best fit; tight mileage caps and high disposition fees can flip the ranking. The table fails when shoppers compare a 36-month offer to a 24-month offer at the same monthly payment without normalizing.

03

What a lease calculator can and cannot estimate

A lease calculator can estimate scenarios when you supply: vehicle MSRP, negotiated cap cost, residual percentage (or absolute residual), money factor, term, mileage, and applicable tax rate. It cannot reliably tell you the residual support and money factor a specific lender is offering this month for a specific vehicle and your specific credit tier. Calculator output is illustrative, not a quote. The real number comes from a lender quote tied to your credit and the specific vehicle. 021 Auto Leasing does not publish live monthly lease payments outside of the deal feed.

04

Fees and terms

Common lease fees include an acquisition fee at the start, a disposition fee at the end if you return the vehicle, and per-mile charges if you exceed the contracted annual mileage cap. Wear-and-tear charges apply when the vehicle comes back outside normal-use guidelines. The leasing contract has to disclose the cost of the lease — including amount due at signing, periodic payment, term, mileage allowance and excess-mileage charges, and end-of-term obligations — before you become obligated, under the federal Consumer Leasing Act.

FAQ

Common Questions

How much does it cost to lease a car?

It depends on the vehicle, term, mileage, credit, and the lender's current program. The visible monthly payment combines depreciation, a finance charge, and applicable tax.

Why does the same car have different lease payments?

The lender-set residual value and any active program offers change on a regular cycle, and credit profile shifts the rate. The same vehicle can carry meaningfully different payments at the same term and mileage.

Is leasing cheaper than buying a car?

On the monthly payment, usually yes, because a lease covers vehicle use over a term rather than the full price. On long-term cost, not necessarily, because leasing does not build equity.

Can a calculator give me my real lease payment?

Calculators give illustrative scenarios when you supply MSRP, cap cost, residual, money factor, term, mileage, and tax. The real number depends on the lender's current program for the specific vehicle and your credit, which only the lender quote produces.
